Yogurt Escape @ Coronado Island, San Diego

We took a bus from the ferry station to the hotel earlier (they’re at different ends of the island) and while on the bus, M saw a frozen yogurt shop that her manager has mentioned to her. M made a note for us to visit it on our way back.

So after visiting the Hotel Del Coronado, we walked around Downtown Coronado for a bit, while searching for the froyo shop. It took a while but we found it!

Yogurt Escape seems to be a San Diego thing, since all their locations are within San-D at the moment.

It was a small shop, nothing like what I’ve experienced here in the Lower Mainland. But it has an interesting concept.

The concept is that it’s self-serve style. You choose your flavor (or flavors) and topping (or toppings!) and pay for how much the whole thing weighs. It only cost $0.39 per oz.

The flavors they had currently were Sugar-free Raspberry, NY Cheesecake, peanut butter (tasted like reese pb cups), Low-fat Strawberry, Vanilla, Cookie ‘n Cream, non-dairy Pomegranate Raspberry, and Honey-dew Tart.

Tuttimelon Revisited – CLOSED

After reading some of the comments left on our initial post on Tuttimelon, we decided to go back unannounced to see how service is for “regular” folks .

So I think the main concern was that the Original yogurt was icy and not smooth enough.  Also that they didn’t put enough toppings on the yogurt.  More importantly…that their mochi wasn’t up to par!!!

Well, that first time there, even though I didn’t get mochi as a topping, I did ask to try it, so I remembered it being the same texture as any other place I’ve tried it.  Just the right chewiness.  I think that all these places actually get them from the same supplier.

So, like I said, we came unannounced.  We came after having dinner w/ F across the street at Cattle Cafe.  When we entered Boyfriend called to Gary, who obviously seemed surprised to see us so soon after the initial visit!

Tuttimelon Premium Frozen Yogurt – CLOSED

Update Feb 4, 2011: This restaurant has since closed down.

Tuttimelon Premium Frozen Yogurt

There’s a new froyo kid in town!!  And it goes by the name of Tuttimelon!

It seems like the frozen yogurt craze down South has gained momentum here in the Lower Mainland.  The newest addition is located on Alexandra Road a couple doors from Kam Do.   I’m so happy that some of them decided to open in good old Richmond.  Boyfriend and I were fortunate to receive an invite from Gary and Benson to try out their yogurt products.

Boyfriend: On the left wall, the ‘wave’ contours is actually a set-standard for all Tuttimelon stores.  So are the white tables and green/orange seating.

Tuttimelon is well established in the States but this location here is the flagship store in Canada.

Yogu-San @ Bellis Fair

On our day of shopping in the States, we happened across a new frozen yogurt place at Bellis Fair.  I thought it’ll be good, since this was the land of the Pinkberrys and the Red Mangos.

Yogu-San

Yogu-san‘s decor is very, very minimalistic.  Too minimalistic in my opinion.  Their mascot is hella cute though!

Oh well, it’s the quality of their products that’s most important.  When we were their the worker was cleaning the machines.  Nice to see people actually cleaning them.

Yogu-San

Like most frozen yogurt places, they have Original, Green Tea, plus a seasonal flavor.  Yogu-san had 2 seasonal flavors when we were there – Mango and Coconut.  Mango was alright, the Coconut needs more coconut flavor.  The Green Tea and Seasonal flavors cost $1 more at $3.50USD.  Each additional topping was $1USD.

Timothy’s Frozen Yogurt

After the lobster sashimi dinner we were ready for MORE ice cream.  G has heard about Timothy’s Frozen Yogurt and I was excited to take them there.

Timothy's Frozen Yogurt

I’ve been to this place ever since I was a kid.  I remember when I was only allowed to get the Kid’s size to when I was finally allowed to have my own Single.  I felt like a grown-up!

I’ve tested many flavors over the years and alas I’ve always come back to either Blueberry or Cherry, the latter being my most frequent choice.

Aside from frozen yogurt, they also serve gelato, coffee, sandwiches and more of the sort.

Timothy's Frozen Yogurt fruit selection

The daily available fruits are written on a menu board above, but you can always just take a look at the freezer to see what’s offered.  They use frozen fruits here but that’s ok, after all, isn’t the nutritional value of fresh and frozen fruits (and veggies) the same???

Timothy's Cherry Frozen Yogurt

I chose Cherry again this time.  I shared a Single cup with L1 which cost $3.50.  The others got Mixed Berries and Banana.  They didn’t share so they each got a Kid’s size for $2.50 each.  L1 was surprised how good Cherry was, as she was expecting an artificial cherry candy flavor.  I reminded her that this was real fruit, not candy.

As for why I like Blueberry and Cherry, it’s ‘cuz they’re the sweetest of the fruits available!

I saw that they offer Mango this time.  I’ll try it next time.

Oh, the way they make this is, they get a block of plain (Vanilla?) frozen yogurt, place it into a big mixer thing, add the fruit, and blend it while dispensing into the container.  This leads to the middle part of your swirl always having some of the just plain yogurt.  Pretty Sister and I used to “compete” to see who got more of the plain stuff, as we liked it plain also.
